The Community Picnic held in celebration of the Queen’s 90th birthday was a tremendous success. Despite variable weather an estimated 700 people attended the event. The Green was traffic-free for the afternoon which saw maypole dancing, impromptu rounders and football matches, colouring competitions, and other games for the children. With hotdogs, tea, cakes and loads of sandwiches the picnic went brilliantly.
The ‘Come Dine With Me’ team from the Sorrel Youth Café provided hot BBQ food and the Scouts provided hot drinks and cakes. A jazz band played throughout the event. The 90 year old VIPs were treated to afternoon tea in Sorrel Court which was prepared and served by Geoff and Sue Wainwright.

Shop Window Dressing Competition
The competition helped to ‘build atmosphere’ in the village prior to the community picnic was well supported. Thanks to all of the businesses throughout the village that took part.
Although there was a clear winner, a tie break was required to split the next 3 places. As it was so close we have decided to give an extra, ‘Highly Commended’ award to 4th place.
1st Place | The Butter Market Café |
2nd Place | The Hair & Beauty Gallery |
3rd Place | Cromwell Road Coffee House |
Highly Commended | Castle View Nursery, Watling Street |

Thanks to all our Community Picnic Helpers
A big thanks to all those who helped plan and organise the afternoon. The MCT were heavily involved but it was a true team effort with Churches Together, the Parish Council (who provided the funding), the Scouts, Sorrel Youth Café, Christ Church and St Peters School and many others helping make it a success.
If you came along to the picnic we hope you enjoyed the event; if you didn’t, make sure to diary the REVIVAL on Sunday 14th August which is the next big event in the Mountsorrel Community social calendar.
